Thank You to Our Volunteers!

We celebrated National Volunteer Week by honoring a few of our volunteers on our social media. We are so grateful for the variety of jobs our volunteers to for the ministry - from working in the centers to stuffing envelopes for mailings!

Betty Gates (shown above) offers her time and talent in the area of material assistance. By sorting through donations, laundering clothes and stacking diapers, Betty is a great help to our Bartholomew County center! Thank you, Betty!

See all the other volunteers we highlighted on our Pregnancy Care Centers of South Central Indiana Facebook page.

Photographer Uses Talents to Serve Clients

Photographer Melissa Jacobs is using her talents to serve our Lord and recently our clients. Melissa and her husband Jeremy were young parents with little money when expecting their son, Evan. They could not afford photos at the hospital, or for taking their son to a studio. Five years later, after establishing her own photography business in the Columbus area and listening to the Lord's leading, Melissa brainstormed a way to give back for the blessing God has lavished on her.
Melissa is now offering expecting mothers at our Bartholomew County Center a free photo shoot for their newborns. Information about the offer is placed in our layette bags, and the clients just need to contact her to schedule the shoot.
Melissa served her first client this October, photographing Baby E. When asked "what is one thing you would like to say about your photo session experience", Baby E's mom replied: "I loved that the pictures were free! Having a new baby it's so hard to afford something like this. I think it's amazing that you give away your time. I love them!"
We would love to offer this kind of service to clients in all the counties we serve. If you know of a photographer you might be interested in partnering with us, please contact your local center manager.

Defenders of the Weak

written by Christy Shaw, Volunteer Coordinator

Recently, many of our staff members were able to attend the Indiana Association of Pregnancy Centers  (IAPC) conference in Indianapolis. The opening devotion was a thought provoking pep talk, steering us forward in the battle we are in daily, as we serve in our communities. I wanted to share some of the statements made, to encourage you in your service here at the PCC, no matter what role that may be. We greatly appreciate and admire the time and efforts given by faithful supporters and volunteers who are “Defenders of the Weak”!

In working with the PCC, you are given the chance each shift to compassionately engage with many stories. In response to those stories, you are obeying scripture in many ways:
  • God is a “Father” that looks after, protects, defends, and provides for the “fatherless”. Our clients may have biological fathers, but the PCC steps in to be a supportive, spiritual, and emotional “father” to them.
  • God looks after our clients, and you do also by listening to and providing for them in their time of need.
  • God commands us to look after the widow and orphaned. A part of PCC’s mission is to serve the babies and clients who are abandoned.
  • You care for the most powerless, voiceless, most vulnerable group in the world – the unborn child. That is close to God’s heart!
  • You serve the margins of society, ones without resources, support, and who are alone and afraid.
  • You are pushing back on evil by affirming life through your compassionate engagements, education, and inspiration!
  • You are caring for the vulnerable and defending a growing culture of death.
When you serve “the least of these", you are most like Jesus! In Matthew 25:40 God tells us that when we serve the weak, we are serving Him by meeting the immediate needs of those who are hungry, thirsty, estranged, needing clothed, sick and in prison. PCC definitely sees people daily who are sick and in bondage to sin. They are in desperate need of love and service, so that our deeds can point them to the One who is the Lover of their souls. I cannot think of a better way to show them God’s love than to meet them right where they are in desperate need of Hope!

I am so glad God meets us where we are and we do not have to become a perfect person before He starts perfecting us! His grace knows no abounds! Amen!

Never grow tired of doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Galatians 6:9

Sharon C. Leavitt Volunteer of the Year Award

On Tuesday, April 15th we held our annual meeting, PCC Impact: The stories behind the numbers. At this event we not only revealed our 2013 Annual Report, but also presented the Sharon C. Leavitt Volunteer of the Year Award.

Volunteers are the cornerstone of the Pregnancy Care Center ministry and vital to accomplishing our mission to compassionately engage, educate and inspire our communities with the truth regarding sexual integrity and the value of human life.  We have been blessed with countless volunteers whom give of themselves sacrificially on a regular basis.

Tracey Pike, Director of Abstinence Education,
presented the Sharon C. Leavitt Volunteer of
the Year Award to Brandy Ecker (on right).
Sharon C. Leavitt served three terms on the board of PCC-SCI, worked as a volunteer in a program to mentor young mothers, served on the annual PCC Golf Challenge committee and was a great advocate for the ministry with everyone she came into contact. She was so deeply dedicated to this work that her passion for helping people through it seemed to grow stronger with every year she served. It is in Sharon’s honor and legacy of service that this award was created.

This year, Brandy Ecker was nominated for the Sharon C. Leavitt Volunteer of the Year Award by Lisa Newton and our Abstinence Education team.

“Brandy lives out our mission by faithfully allowing the Holy Spirit to use both her strengths and ‘grace covered scars’ to bring healing to the broken places in students’ lives and hope for their future,” Newton said. “They overwhelmingly give positive and impactful statements on their feedback forms regarding her presentations.”

Because of her heart to serve and dedication to our I Decide For Me program, Brandy was chosen as 2013 Sharon C. Leavitt Volunteer of the Year Award Winner. Congratulations Brandy!

Giving Thanks: One Volunteer Shares His Passion

One of our male counselor volunteers told us why he does what he does, so we asked him to write it down. Keep reading to see why this ministry is important to him!

It’s a fact; men and women are different.  And it does seem a bit odd to ask our male clients, “Are you here for a pregnancy test?”  Yet, the male clients who come to the Pregnancy Care Center (PCC) come for a variety of reasons, and in most cases it’s because they care, care deeply about their baby and about their partner.  While the women generally have a circle of friends and/or relatives with whom they can and do discuss intimate subjects, men generally do not.  Society tells men that they are not supposed to have emotions, are not supposed to cry, are not supposed to mourn the loss of their child, but they do.  And they worry about providing for their loved ones.  And that’s why the men’s ministry component of the PCC is such an important and integral part of the services the PCC provides.  Each male client has the opportunity to meet individually with a male counselor and to discuss important social, physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of his life.

Each client is different and has different needs, individual needs which we try to address.  Often the client’s greatest needs are unknown to him due to a variety of circumstances.  Many of our clients have never had a positive male role model in their lives nor have they had anybody with whom they can share or discuss their deepest and most intimate concerns.  We listen, we counsel, we educate, and we share the Gospel with each client, assuring him of God’s love, His mercy, and His grace for him.  Like farmers, we sow seeds with the full knowledge and realization that some of those seeds fall on rocky or unfertile soil, while others fall on fertile soil, soil rich and inviting and open to the grace, mercy, and love God has for each and every person.

It is truly an honor and a privilege to volunteer and serve as a male counselor at the PCC, knowing that the impact we have on each male client may ultimately have a positive impact on the life of his expected child, on his relationships with others, on his physical and emotional well being, and on his spiritual relationship with God.  This is an abundantly fulfilling and positive ministry which addresses the needs of a segment of society too often overlooked or neglected.  Ultimately both the client and the counselor are richly blessed through the men’s ministry of the PCC.  The men’s ministry richly complements and augments the ministry the PCC provides to the women of the community and is an integral and vital part of the total program.

It is a blessing to have volunteers such as this working alongside us. We are incredibly thankful for our steadfast volunteers, sincere donors and hard-working staff.

Happy Thanksgiving!

We were blessed by a great crew that moved our Jackson County Center to its new location a few weeks ago. What would we do without our WONDERFUL volunteers?!

Decatur County Center Gets A Facelift

The United Methodist Church of Greensburg volunteered their time and energy last month to paint and freshen up the offices and waiting room of the Decatur County Center. Greensburg Church of God also came into the center to do some cleaning as well as purchased needed items for the center. Darla Goodman, Decatur County Center Manager, said “It looks great and we are really excited.” We always want to make sure our centers are clean and inviting and we greatly appreciate the help and support of our local churches to make this possible.

Spring Volunteer Traning

The Pregnancy Care Center relies greatly on the many volunteers who love and support this ministry. Earlier this month the Spring Volunteer Training concluded with 19 new volunteers ready to get plugged into the work that is being done through the PCC. Those in attendance came from all areas of the six counties in which we serve, with different areas of interest including Abstinence Education, Post Abortion Healing and Client Services.

Each year the PCC takes part in 3 different Volunteer Training sessions to train and equip our volunteers. The men and women that come ultimately serve as peer counselors, receptionists, medical service volunteers and/or educators in the Transformed, Choose to Wait and My Best For You programs.

The 18 hour training takes a closer look at each of these areas of ministry within the Pregnancy Care Center as well as the history of the PCC and the biblical basis of the sanctity of life. It also focuses on the clients we serve and how to best serve them. One attendee said “The training was great! It revealed to me the great opportunity that I could have to impact the lives of others for the cause of Christ.”

We are grateful for these opportunities to meet and work with men and women who also have a passion to uphold the value of life.

Ray Turner...Always Going Above and Beyond

For the past 6 ½ years Ray Turner has been dedicated to serving as a handy man around the Bartholomew County Center. After coming to a banquet years ago he decided he wanted to get involved and help the Pregnancy Care Centers. He then took part in the Volunteer Training and decided he could best be used as a handy man since he is gifted in that area. Judy Snow, Bartholomew County Center Director, says “Ray does a little bit of everything. He changes our furnace filters, replaced our back door and installed a door between the waiting room and counseling rooms. He paints, organizes and repairs the sheds, mounts pictures on the wall and when all our racks for maternity cloths ripped off the wall one day, Ray repaired them and put them back up.”

He is also known for making necessary repairs to items that have been donated that might be missing a few pieces. Ray repairs them so they can be given to clients instead of just thrown away and says they “would be a shame not to use because of a few missing pieces.” Ray is a blessing to the PCC ministry. He always has a smile and is praising the Lord. We are so thankful for all our volunteers like Ray!

Volunteer Training Starts Tonight!

Join us in praying for the men and women who will be attending our summer volunteer training sessions that begins tonight.

These men and women come wanting to serve as peer counselors, receptionists, phone line volunteers and medical services volunteers. Over the course of the next week, they will spend 18 hours in training, learning the ins and outs of the ministry, the clients we serve and how best to serve them.

Pray that clarity and boldness flows through the 12 staff members and volunteers who will be presenting throughout the week. Ask God to give the trainees eagerness to learn and a passion for this work in addition to perseverance in their studying and learning this week.

Privacy of Clients of Utmost Importance

We at the Bartholomew County Center are most appreciative to Ray Turner and his son, Richard, who recently installed a door between the waiting room and client service area at the Center. Ray is our volunteer handyman who comes in each week to do various jobs that help with the upkeep of the center.

Prior to the installation of the door, there was no barrier between the waiting room to the client services area where the counseling rooms, ultrasound room and office areas are located. Often, our receptionists’ jobs take them away from the window which overlooks the waiting room. Receptionists are not always able to intervene at times when parents or boyfriends would walk from the waiting room to look for the client in the counseling room. This diminishes the privacy and confidentiality of our clients. Now, those in the waiting room will not be able to enter the client services area or office areas unless the door is opened and they are invited to come by PCC staff or volunteers.

Many thanks to Ray and Richard for donating their time and expertise to install the door!

Coming to a Yard Sale Near You!

There are so many yard sales in the community right now and some of our volunteers have been attending to pick up clothing in the sizes we are in desperate need of here at the center. Upon leaving the sale, they hand the owner of the sale our business card, inviting them to bring anything they don't sell to the center.

Not only are we getting many donated items, but more people are finding out about the Pregnancy Care Center and what we do!
